The Mural Building: WINGS Program, Inc.

Just like the organization’s butterfly logo, WINGS Program, Inc. wants to give flight to dreams for a better future. Since 1985, the nonprofit has provided a pathway to independence for people whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence. This organization breaks the harmful cycle of abuse by providing tools and support to ensure victims can escape their abusers and begin building new, violence-free lives. By safely intervening to provide emergency shelter at 33 safe housing options across Chicagoland, the WINGS staff provides integrated counseling services, a mentorship program, and advocacy support for residents. These tools empower people to start a new journey, moving forward to safety, security, and independence.

Since domestic violence is a growing social concern in Chicago, this mural addresses a difficult subject through the healing power of art, and brings awareness to the variety of services WINGS offers. Our hope is that people in abusive situations see the mural artwork and know they are not alone, that there is hope and help for them.

By incorporating the nonprofit’s signature purple color and butterfly imagery throughout the mural, the journey of a mother and child is brought to life in the three artwork panels. The design illustrates the security and comfort WINGS can provide, as well as the “hope and freedom” that are possible. The third panel is a bright new day with the mother and older child “surviving and thriving” by a Chicago skyline. Here, little butterfly details in the clouds reinforce the cycle of recovery and how deeply WINGS has impacted their journey.

We’re proud to continue our seven-year partnership with WINGS, as Wintrust employees serve on the WINGS Associate Council and Board of Directors. A strong community begins at home, and we’re committed to ending the cycle domestic violence.

WINGS’s signature holiday event, Sweet Home Chicago, will take place virtually on December 13, 2020. Sponsorships are available, and supporters who make a donation of $100 or more will receive a beautiful gingerbread house kit to assemble at home. Click here for details.
